As the temperature begins to drop, we start to crave warm and hearty comfort foods; it’s only natural. Fortunately, each season provides us with a new harvest to help our bodies and minds. Not only does eating foods that are in season locally allow you to live in sync with nature, but it also brings many health benefits! Here are some of our favorite reasons to eat food that is in season where you live.
It’s Extra Fresh
Perfectly ripe produce contains more phytonutrients and antioxidants than those that are harvested early. Much of the non-local produce is picked early in order to survive transport from far away places. It may even be preserved with a wax coating in order to extend shelf life. Seasonal produce is picked at the peak of ripeness and is able to be transported to local stores in no time. This ensures you are getting high quality produce!
It Adds Variety
When you choose to cook with seasonal foods, you are bound to pick up something that you’ve never cooked with before. Choosing seasonal foods helps you become more creative in the kitchen by substituting for your usual staples. By adding more variety to your diet throughout the seasons, you obtain a wider range of nutrients as well as discover new tastes!
It’s Environmentally Friendly
Unlike non-local fruits and vegetables, seasonal produce doesn’t require extensive transportation, which means much lower “food-mileage.” Also with this decrease in transportation time, the need for wax coatings and chemical ripening agents is minimal to none. Seasonal produce also supports local farmers who tend to use better farming practices than those who ship over long distances. This means more nutrient dense soil and less exposure of pesticides to the environment.
It’s More Affordable
When something is in season, it means that the produce has the perfect conditions and environment for it to flourish; which leads to a plentiful bounty! When there is an abundance of a certain produce, costs go down. Farmers will sell at a lower cost rather than waste the product. So it’s a win, win!
Now get out of your comfort zone and try something new! Not only will your body thank you, but so will your wallet and the environment
