High levels of saturated fat are associated with elevated cholesterol. By replacing unhealthy fat with healthy fats like monounsaturated fats, the health risks associated with saturated fat intake are lowered. (Saturated fats are found in food sources like butter, cheese, red meat and other animal-based foods.)
The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fats for healthy Americans to less than 7% of your total daily caloric intake. If you need about 2,000 calories a day, less than 140 calories (16g) should come from saturated fats.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the FDA recommends consuming less than 300 mg/day of cholesterol and keeping the consumption of trans fats as low as possible.
