Grass Fed Beef At Terra’s Kitchen

Written by Terra's Kitchen | Tue, Oct 4, '16

At Terra’s Kitchen, we work hard to source the best natural ingredients for our meal delivery kits. Grass-fed beef seems to be popping up everywhere from hip restaurants to high-end grocery stores and even a few fast food chains are testing it on their menus. What does it really mean?

The grass-fed trend is positive because it maximizes animal welfare (by ensuring that cattle are not in cramped feedlots) while delivering a superior tasting product. Grass-fed cows are only fed grass and forages from weaning until harvest, allowing them to feed themselves using their natural instincts. As a comparison, conventional cattle in the industrial agriculture system spend at least the last 120 days prior to harvest in feedlots and are almost always administered antibiotics to ensure they do not get sick. [1]

This type of beef is more flavorful, healthier, and better for the environment than conventional beef, which is why we are proud to serve only grass-fed beef on our menu. In addition to being grass-fed, our beef (like all of our other meats) is hormone- and antibiotic-free. Grass-fed cows do not need the antibiotics given to conventional cattle because of the environment in which they are raised. We also only work with suppliers who raise their beef cleanly and humanely.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the health benefits associated with grass-fed beef when compared to grain-fed beef are:

  • Less total fat
  • More heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids
  • More conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that's thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks
  • More antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E

You can find our grass-fed beef in recipes like Chuck’s Pasta Party Bowl and the Asian Beef and Broccoli. You can also add a la carte Ground Beef or Skirt Steak to your order to ensure you have high-quality, all-natural meats on hand for all of your favorite recipes.
