Imagine this: you’re wrapped in the softest white faux-fur blanket, snuggled up next to your furry, feet-warming friend, sipping on a steaming cup of hazelnut coffee while reading the just-released final book in your favorite trilogy. Feeling cozy? This is the feeling of hygge, a danish word that literally means ‘coziness’ in English. Pronounced hue-gah, hygge means togetherness, relaxation, indulgence, presence and comfort -- we can’t think of a better word to describe Terra’s Kitchen.
So are you ready to live a little bit more hygge? Here’s a few ways to relax and find pleasure in the everyday, ordinary moments! Happy Hygge-ing!
- Create your space. This doesn’t require a big investment in time or money and you don’t have to hire an interior decorator to make your space great. Some easy ways to do this are to light a candle or start the fireplace, dim the lights, turn on soft music, tidy up a bit or buy some soft throw pillows or a blanket. If you do want to redecorate, use neutral colors to soften your space and add interest using textures instead of bright colors.
- Cook simple, yet delicious meals. Part of living hygge is living easy. A great way to do that is by cooking crock-pot meals. These are fast prep, slow cook meals and they make the house smell great! Terra’s Kitchen has four slow cooker meals: Moroccan Chicken Tagine, Barbacoa Street Tacos, Meaty Red Sauce and Pasta, and Curry Vegetable Soup. Cook Hygge!
- Change your attitude. The Danes are overall happier people and look for the best in every situation. Maybe we don’t look forward to cleaning the house, going to work or getting back in shape at the gym, but there is always some good in these activities. For example, when you exercise, your body is releasing endorphins which make you feel hygge and you’ll be more fit to do activities you might not have been able to do before!
- Spend time with friends. People were meant to have friendships and relationships! Don’t feel guilty if you leave work a little early or skip a study session to get coffee with a friend instead. You’ll feel happier and more content in life after you’ve spent some quality time with your closest friends. Switch things up by joining a new group or club, participating in your favorite sport or learning about something new and different. Don’t be afraid to try new things; it’s the hygge way.
Terra’s Kitchen was started to bring families back together around the table. Our goal is for families to get back to simpler times, enjoy each other's company, be present and live in the moment.
