New year’s resolutions are nothing more than goals with a fancier name. Setting an annual goal after reflecting on the past year gives you something to aim for, and having a plan will help you get where you want to be. Sometimes resolutions get a bad reputation as unattainable and something you’re bound to quit after a few weeks of solid effort. As you reflect on 2017 and think about the upcoming year, here are a few questions to ask yourself as you define your goals.
What do you want to do less (or more) of?
As tempting as it is to fill your calendar with new commitments for gym time and personal development, think first about what you did this past year that you want to do a whole lot less. That could mean less mindless scrolling through Facebook, or less buying things you don’t really need. In our busy lives, finding ways to minimize the noise can help make room for the things that really matter to you. Next, think about what you really enjoyed this past year, and how you can do more of it! Maybe you really enjoyed spending time with family and friends, participating in a book club or sticking to a solid morning routine. Focus on what’s working for you and commit to doing more of those things this year.
Is there anything you’d like to do completely differently?
They say that hindsight is 20-20, and sometimes when you look back, it’s easy to see that you could’ve done things more efficiently. Whether that means utilizing a meal delivery service instead of takeout to make family dinner happen or following online workouts from BurnAlong instead of trying to get to the gym every day, this is a good time to change your methods so you can reach your goals. Think about your goal or desired outcome and brainstorm all of the possible ways you can get there. Write them all down, even the ones that seem a little silly or outrageous. You might be surprised by what you come up with.
What is something new you’d like to learn or try?
It’s common to get stuck in a rut doing the same things day in and day out. While there is something to be said for finding a routine that works for you and sticking to it, learning new things keeps life interesting. Choose at least one thing you want to learn this year. It can be as simple as learning how to poach an egg or keep houseplants alive, or something larger like learning Spanish or finally attempting a DIY kitchen renovation. There are plenty of great resources available (and many are free!) online for just about anything you want to learn or try. Challenge yourself to learn at least one new thing this year; you’ll be amazed by the results.
How can you make a difference?
There are so many easy ways you can make a positive impact. Helping others is one of the easiest ways to increase your own happiness and satisfaction with your life. So find a way to help a neighbor, mentor someone at work, volunteer your time, or donate things you no longer need. You can also make a difference by reducing your environmental impact by choosing to shop with eco-friendly and sustainable companies like Terra’s Kitchen.
