An effective cleanse doesn’t have to mean sticking to a juice-only diet. In our modern lifestyles, environmental pollution, processed foods, and even stress all have effects that can be counteracted with a cleanse. From your gut to your lymphatic system, here are 4 natural (and easy!) ways to start detoxing without a huge commitment.
Starting your day with a nutrient-packed drink can make a big difference in how your body processes and removes toxins throughout the day. If drinking green juice is a part of your routine, enjoy yours first thing in the morning to ensure you absorb the maximum amount of nutrients and antioxidants. If green juices freak you out, there are other options. Try drinking a full glass of warm lemon water as soon as you wake up in the morning. This will hydrate you, flush your digestive system and only takes a few minutes!
Simply adjusting your diet to remove processed and sugar-filled foods can make a big difference pretty quickly. If you want to cleanse, this is where you need to start. Choose lots of raw vegetables, leafy greens, and fresh fruits. Other foods that are known to detoxify the body include garlic and broccoli sprouts. The ignite enzymes in your digestive tract that help to remove toxins. Most of the time, these fresh foods are also packed with fiber (which keeps you full) and include a high water content (to keep you hydrated) so you won’t feel like you’re depriving yourself while you’re cleansing from the inside, out.
The lymphatic system is one of your body’s biggest systems. It plays a crucial part in your circulatory system. The glands, vessels and nodes that make up your lymphatic system touch almost every part of your body in some way, so flushing it out occasionally is a good thing. There are a few natural ways to cleanse your lymphatic system. (Drinking plenty of water is probably one of the easiest ways.) You can encourage movement in your lymphatic system through directed massage or dry brushing. Sauna and exercise can also help by stimulating your circulatory system. The more you get your body moving and work up a sweat, the better your results will be. (Note: Please consult your doctor before using a sauna or starting a new exercise program.)
Making changes in your diet can be stressful, so it’s important to remember to relax! Simply exhaling releases carbon dioxide, which is poisonous to the body. You may notice you're holding your breath when you’re stressed out, so be mindful in those moments and remind yourself to breathe. Another symptom of stress is heightened cortisol levels. Cortisol is the body’s reaction to stress, but it also plays a role in how your body processes carbs, lipids and proteins. You can manage your cortisol level by reducing stress. Some effective methods are meditation, yoga, or even just taking a nap! Sometimes a little rest is all you need for a fresh start.
