Low Carb vs. Low Fat: A Nutritionist’s Thoughts

Study results from the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) include a large group of adults living in 18 different countries over a period of years. Researchers found that a higher intake of carbohydrates was associated with an increased risk of death, whereas a higher intake of fat, particularly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, was associated with a decreased risk of death.


To get a nutritionist’s perspective on the study, we asked Terra’s Kitchen’s Chief Nutrition Officer Lisa Davis, PhD, PA-C, CNS for her take.

When people eat low amounts of fat, it’s usually carbohydrates that take its place. Scientists believe that the uptake in carbs is potentially even worse than before, as carbs are easily stored in the body as glucose, which can raise blood sugar levels and contributes to obesity and diabetes.


“The macronutrient composition of meals matters. Meals that feature healthy fats are good,” Dr. Davis said.

“At Terra’s Kitchen, our meals feature a higher proportion of healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) and a lower amount of carbohydrates similar to that of a Mediterranean-style diet. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes a diet rich in plant-based foods such as whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. It also promotes the use of heart healthy fats such as olive and canola oil, and encourages consuming fish and seafood and limited amounts of dairy, poultry and red meats. Numerous studies have found that following a MSD is associated with lower cholesterol levels and heart disease, inflammation, diabetes and risk of dying.“
