When your fridge is beautifully organized and easy to navigate, healthy eating is easier. Seeing meal kit ingredients spread across your kitchen island may feel overwhelming at first, but with a little bit of smart organizing, your refrigerator can be stacked for success. Here is the process we recommend for realigning your refrigerator to make room for fresh meal delivery from Terra’s Kitchen.
Unpack your vessel. Open up the drawers and take everything out. Counter space near your refrigerator or your kitchen island are good places to take inventory of what you received. If you don’t want to carry your vessel all the way to the kitchen, try using a reusable tote to transport your food between the drop off point and your kitchen. This is the best way to do it, especially if you live in an apartment building or if you have your vessel delivered to your office.
Separate your ingredients by meal number. Once you have unloaded your trays, you will notice that each container is labeled with a numbered sticker. The numbers tell you which meal that ingredient is for. For example, the Black and Blue Steak Salad is number 218.
Check the dates. Our pre-prepped ingredients arrive chilled and ready to cook thanks to our eco-friendly vessel, but naturally, not all ingredients last the same amount of time. Things like salad greens and fresh cut herbs should be used first, if possible, since they aren’t as resilient as things like sweet potatoes and limes. Each ingredient has a clearly marked “best by” date so you don’t have to guess which meals to make first.
Stock your fridge and check your pantry. Plan when you will cook each meal and stack your meals in rows, keeping the ingredients for each meal together based on your meal plan. This is also a good time to double check your recipe cards to make sure you have all of the pantry items you need. Since they are things like salt and olive oil, don’t worry, you probably have them. It is always good to check ahead of time though because, after a long day, you don’t want to be surprised to find out that you are out of flour when you start to cook Swedish Meatballs.
Order matters! Store meats on the bottom of your stack and towards the back of the fridge to make sure they stay the coldest. Keep things that don’t need to be refrigerated, like orzo or rice, either in your pantry or at the very front of your fridge if you have room and want to keep everything together. And don’t forget that you can freeze extra protein like chicken tenders or bacon to extend their shelf life.
Adjust for practicality. There are tons of different shelf and drawer configurations that are possible for every refrigerator. If you aren’t stocking tall items like juice bottles, adjust your shelf heights to be more evenly distributed vertically so you can have more little stacks of items (like TK ingredients!).
Maintain visibility. Think about using baskets or bins to keep similar items together. This makes it easy to find and move items quickly. We also love designating a crisper drawer for healthy snacks and Grab 'n Go lunches like our pre-made salads. Place your healthiest drinks like cold-pressed juices directly in your sightline (instead of in the door) and you will be on your way to making great choices without even thinking.
