There are many reasons to include apples in your diet all year round. They are a superfood afterall. We have all heard about “an apple a day” but are apples really a prescription for good health? Here are a few reasons to include fresh apples in your diet, especially in the fall when they are in season.

  1. Overall Nutritional Value - Apples pack a ton of nutritional value with a relatively low calorie count. An average sized apple also counts as a serving of fruit, so by adding one to your daily routine puts you halfway to your recommended daily servings. Don’t peel your apples if you can avoid it because much of the nutritional value is in the apple skin.
  2. Fiber - The modest fiber content makes apples a filling snack and, if you choose a sweet variety like Gala or Golden Delicious, apples can even help satisfy your sweet tooth. The fiber in apples is soluble, which helps to moderate blood glucose levels and lowering cholesterol. (Apple skins contain insoluble fiber, which aids in regularity.)
  3. Antioxidants like Vitamin C - As we enter cold season, an extra antibiotic boost always helps to stay healthy. Apples are a good source of not only Vitamin C, but also polyphenols and flavonoids.
  4. Heart Healthy - The American Heart Association recommends including fruits like apples as a part of a heart healthy diet. Apples are associated with a lower risk of heart disease, especially for women.
  5. Variety - These are so many types of apples and they all have a slightly different chemical and nutritional makeup. By mixing up your apple types, not only will you get to enjoy a variety of flavors from sweet to sour, but a variety of nutritional benefits.

A trip to the local apple orchard is a weekend activity on many fall bucket lists, but what do you do with all of those apples once you’ve picked them? Of course they can be eaten on their own, made into applesauce, or baked into a pie or apple crisp, but don’t forget that they are great in salads and can contribute to a delightfully unexpected side.

Here are two quick apple recipes using this seasonal ingredient -- and both meals can be on your table in under 30 minutes!

  • Grilled Chicken with Radish Apple Salad - This meal does double duty as dinner for today and a healthy lunch for tomorrow. If you are trying to get some of your meal prep done in advance, portion this meal out, keeping the dressing on the side and you will have a fresh salad that is ready to grab and go for lunch tomorrow.

  • Chicken Schnitzel w/ Sweet & Sour Apple Cabbage - Apple can also contribute to a unique side dish, like the sweet and sour apple cabbage that accompanies our Chicken Schnitzel. You can also use this mixture over mashed potatoes, and trust us, it is delicious!
