Taking a Front Seat as a Woman in Business

Written by Terra's Kitchen | Wed, Oct 5, '16

When I was young, I was told that I could be anything I wanted to be, even though I was a girl. Entering the workforce as a young woman, I quickly saw the reality --  gender would play a role in my career success. While there have been challenges, I also realized that it was up to me to overcome obstacles. Fortunately, the workplace is changing and smart companies are embracing diversity -- including gender -- and seeing a woman in business as a competitive advantage.

One year ago, I joined Terra’s Kitchen and have had a front seat for its rapid growth. As a mother and wife (among other titles), our core purpose is incredibly important to me -- bringing families and friends back to the table to share a healthy meal. Every day, my team and I encourage people to slow down and talk about their days, and that message is resonating. Not only are we bringing health and convenience to customers, but we’re creating employment opportunities and and bringing greater focus on Baltimore’s startups.

The women of Terra’s Kitchen are innovators, problem solvers, challenge seekers and decision makers. They are doctors, business leaders, culinary masters, artists, PR pros,  mothers, daughters and friends. Here, women occupy the C-suite, innovate our products, build our partnerships and help our comany thrive.

I’m humbled to be honored as one of the Baltimore Sun’s “25 Women to Watch” among talented and inspiring women from all backgrounds and roles in our community. This inaugural event is a celebration of diversity in Baltimore that highlights how women in business are making contributions to our local economy and community fabric.

Raising three little girls, I remind myself every day how important it is for women to support each other, lift each other up and realize that our only limitations are those we put on ourselves. My advice for women in business is see yourself as the primary driver of your success. If you find yourself in a place where that isn’t the case, find the courage to move on. Seek out experiences that invest in you and allow you to thrive.
